Brendon McCullum’s task is to change Englands white-ball mood

Brendon McCullum's task is to change Englands white-ball mood

The New Zealander faces a ludicrous schedule, but his new role provides much-needed stability for the players.

At the conclusion of the final Test of the summer against Sri Lanka, starting Friday at the Oval, Brendon McCullum will head back to New Zealand for what’s being described as a brief break— a calm before the storm.

Since taking over as head coach of England’s red-ball team 25 months ago, during which they’ve played more Tests than any other team, he has managed to split his time between home and Test grounds. But that balance is about to shift.

England’s schedule, which McCullum and Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, highlighted when announcing the Kiwi’s new dual role on Tuesday, will ease slightly next year from what has become a nearly impossible workload.

August has only just ended, yet the next time England will go more than 48 hours without a senior squad in action will be during Christmas week.

The Challenges Ahead for Brendon McCullum: A Demanding 2025 and Beyond

Though 2025 promises to be slightly calmer, England still faces a packed schedule with nine Tests, at least 20 one-day internationals (potentially more if they perform well at the Champions Trophy), and a dozen Twenty20s. The team will travel to India, Pakistan, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia, while also hosting West Indies, India, and South Africa.

The following year kicks off with the final two Ashes Tests, a six-game white-ball series in Sri Lanka, and a T20 World Cup, all wrapped up by the first week of March. Overseeing such a demanding itinerary would require an extraordinary level of commitment.

It’s been just over two years since Rob Key decided to split England’s coaching duties, yet the idea of one person managing every senior fixture now seems nearly impossible. In reality, this may remain the case: McCullum could be the first England coach for whom attending every match is not mandatory.

His role isn’t centered on providing tactical or technical analysis, directing field placements, or pinpointing matchups. Instead, his mission is to foster a positive environment.

As Test captain Ben Stokes put it, McCullum’s focus is on making everyone feel, in his words, “10 feet tall.” His approach challenges traditional norms. Why must training sessions be compulsory? Why can’t a Test team aim to score at five runs an over? Why should opening batters conform to the same approach? And above all, why take everything so seriously?

“I always felt that when playing, everything revolved around cricket, and sometimes you forgot to have fun,” he said in February 2023. “We aim to create an environment where everyone is excited to come to work, enjoys themselves, strives to be the best version of themselves, and pushes the limits of their potential. That’s our priority.”

McCullum's Challenge: Reviving England's White-Ball Spirit

In 2022, Brendon McCullum was brought in to lead a struggling red-ball team, while Australian Matthew Mott took charge of a white-ball squad riding high on unprecedented success. At that time, it was clear which team needed a boost in positivity.

However, two years later, the situation has reversed: England’s red-ball performances have significantly improved, while the white-ball team has suffered a steep decline, meekly surrendering both the 50-over and T20 World Cups in the past 10 months.

The fearless approach that Eoin Morgan instilled in the white-ball team has faded since Jos Buttler took over as captain, leading to disastrous results. Reversing this decline will require more than just positive vibes—those tournaments were marred by a series of glaring tactical errors. However, the most urgent task is to restore the team’s confidence and change the mood.
